I like the concept of this one, I think I'll work with the idea a little more in the future.

Street Art

"People say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish... but that's only if it's done properly." - Banksy.

You may have seen this image; it's one of my favorites, and today I was compelled to try to find its artist. You can read up on this artist, Banksy, on Wikipedia. Banksy is a street artist who operates in the Bristol, England area. The images are graffiti and are really quite beautiful. You can see more of this art at banksy.co.uk, and my favorites are posted below.

9 Ways to trick yourself into being socially active

  1. Buy your fabulous graduation, birthday, and thank-you cards from Cards by Bo. (They'll also be 100% post-consumer recycled)
  2. Decorate using Branch home decor... it's inspired, as well as ecofriendly.
  3. Use your lunchbreak to listen to this engaging audio presentation... The coolest thing I've heard in a long time. An NPR station-produced program regarding "Peace, War and Indifference", using influential speeches and fantastic music. Worth the full hour of your time, no doubt about it.
  4. Instead of wasting time reading Facebook status updates, read one sentence life stories instead.
  5. Buy a few summer staples (or maybe even some unnecessary splurges?) on Goodwill's auction site.
  6. Stop shopping at Walmart. (trust me on this one.)
  7. Have a movie night. Watch Michael Moore's documentary Sicko, and browse the healthcare reform site. For bonus points, do this one with an open mind.
  8. Shop in healthy, renewable, socially responsible ways. You'll need to check out this wonderful ranking site as you choose your Walmart alternatives (see number 6)
  9. Set your alarm to play your local NPR station in the morning. The world is bigger than your neighborhood, state, and nation. Learn about it, care about it.

I'm doing something new. I don't know if it will work, or if it's even worth doing. Not many of my drawings have seen the light of day. But, for an indefinite period of time, I'm going to attempt to post a drawing per day. I'd love some feedback (positive or negative).

And so begins the humble exhibition of my soul. Please enjoy, otherwise there is little purpose in this.

apathy.

The words of Søren Kierkegaard convict me, move me. Written a century and a half ago, this passage (On The Wickedness of The Age) speaks truer today than anything I've read recently.

Let others complain that the age is wicked; my complaint is that it is wretched, for it lacks passion. Men's thoughts are thin and flimsy like lace, they are themselves pitiable like the lacemakers. The thoughts of their hearts are too paltry to be sinful. For a worm it might be regarded as a sin to harbor such thoughts, but not for a being made in the image of God. Their lusts are dull and sluggish, their passions sleepy. They do their duty, these shopkeeping souls, but they clip the coin a trifle...they think that even if the Lord keeps ever so careful a set of books, they may still cheat Him a little. Out upon them! This is the reason my soul always turns back to the Old Testament and to Shakespeare. I feel that those who speak there are at least human beings; they hate, they love, they murder their enemies and curse their descendants throughout all generations, they sin.
God save me from my own apathy.

More thoughts from Blaise Pascal on the matter of lethargy of the soul, but perhaps in a different dose. Check back.

I wish I could describe him to you.

for me to live is Christ.

I tend to shy away from New Year's resolutions... but let's spend 2009 with compassionate hearts that lead us to fruitful labor. Let's spend the rest of our lives living as an example and a witness and with a heart that mirrors God's own.

Try it: care. weep. act.
